Little Rock AIDS agency torched
A fire July 10 caused $100,000 in damage to the HIV-AIDS Action Life Center of the Ryan White Act AIDS Consortium building east of Little Rock's downtown area. No one was reported injured in the blaze. Officials say they're looking for new quarters in the wake of the suspected arson fire.
A board member said there was no insurance to cover losses in the frame structure. He said the center lost typewriters, a computer and printer, a new telephone system and a copier in the fire
Also destroyed, he said, was the center's supply of major non-disposable medical equipment including hospital beds, wheelchairs and portable toilets.
Herbs can't cure without a license
Freehold, N.J.-A Marlboro Township business that allegedly sells herbs as a treatment for AIDS has been shut down and its owner charged with practicing medicine without a license, the attorney general said.
Alan Rosenthal, president of Herbal Research Center, also was charged with violating the Consumer Fraud Act, Attorney General Robert J. Del Tufo and Consumer Affairs Director Emma N. Byrne said July 6.
Monmouth County Judge Patrick J. McGann Jr. ordered the temporary restraints pending a July 26 hearing. Rosenthal declined to comment on the action.
According to a state complaint, Rosenthal advertised in a local newspaper: “AIDS and HIV Sufferers, Help is available with Effective Herbal Treatment."
Rosenthal allegedly told an undercover investigator who bought the herbs for $100 that she would know if the treatment was working because her T-cell count would increase and her vital organs would be strengthened.
Florida tourism bureau avoids gay rights fight
Orlando, Fla.-Members of the Orlando/ Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau indicated in June that they expected to pass a resolution in support of gay civil rights. But the bureau decided June 15, on the advice of its lawyer, to take no stand on a religious-right initiative to ban local gay rights laws.
Bureau leaders, like tourism leaders statewide, are concerned that approval of a proposed state-wide anti-gay referendum would spark a boycott of the state by conventioneers and tourists, similar to the Colorado boycott.
Instead of passing a resolution in support of gay rights to send a message that the tourism industry supported the rights of all individuals, the bureau drafted a short statement saying it opposed any boycott, no matter what the source, that would harm the tourism industry.
Fired FBI agent sues agency
San Francisco-A fired gay FBI agent has accused the agency of blackmailing gay agents by threatening to expose them to family and friends unless they resign.
Frank Buttino said the practice was revealed in documents he obtained from the FBI for the discrimination lawsuit he filed.
The class-action lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial here in September. Buttino, a 20-
year veteran then stationed in San Diego, was fired in 1990 after disclosing his sexual orientation in response to an anonymous note that was sent to his supervisors.
The Justice Department said he was fired because he lied to investigators about his sexual orientation and because he made himself vulnerable to coercion. Buttino says those explanations were a pretext for antigay bias.
He has also recently published a book that documents the FBI's history of harassment and abuse toward employees who were suspected of being gay.
Nevada allows private gay sex
Carson City, Nev.-A bill allowing gay sex in private was signed into law in June by Gov. Bob Miller, who says Nevada's antisodomy law dating to 1911 was unenforceable.
The measure cancels a law that made gay sex between consenting adults a felony. However, the bill was amended to make homosexual sex in public a felony punishable by up to six years in prison.
Human rights board stays neutral
Burley, Idaho-The Cassia County Human Relations Committee that was formed to help improve human relations has decided it will not take a stance on the controversial anti-gay initiative being headed up by the Idaho Citizens Alliance.
At its general board meeting on July 7, the committee board announced it would not take a position on the initiative pushed by the ICA and its head, Kelly Walton of Burley.
"This is an issue that could be very divisive and get us off track," Committee President Stephen Bywater said. "We've deIcided to let that issue be solved in the political sphere."
The Human Relations Committee was founded at the request of the Cassia County Commissioners earlier this year. Now an independent committee, members from various parts and positions of the community are concentrating on setting up plans to improve race relations and the community's social interaction as a whole.
Bloomington gets symbolic gay rights law
Bloomington, Ind.-The City Council on July 8 approved a gay rights ordinance in a marathon session that ended with a 9-0 vote.
The meeting had been moved from the council chambers to a nearby church after more than 550 people showed up.
Mayor Tomi Allison said she would sign the measure, which discourages discrimination based on sexual orientation.
The ordinance's effect is largely symbolic because of restrictions placed on the power of municipalities by state law, the council said.
However, that could be changed by a companion resolution that also was approved. The resolution asks the Indinana Legislature to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation statewide. As an alternative, the measure asks lawmakers to grant communities more control so local human rights commissions could investigate and order enforcement of anti-discrimination laws.
